Choosing the Right Monitoring Approach

Effective environmental monitoring rarely relies on a single method. Sampling, field measurement and continuous monitoring each provide different information, while telemetry improves how continuous data is accessed and managed. The appropriate combination depends on the monitoring objective, parameters, site conditions and regulatory requirements.

Groundwater Sampling & Monitoring

Groundwater monitoring can help establish baseline conditions, identify changes in groundwater levels and quality, assess potential environmental impacts, and understand the effects of quarry pumping and dewatering.

Monitoring requirements can range from routine sampling and manual water-level measurements through to pumping investigations, continuous level logging and remotely connected groundwater monitoring networks.

Systems can be developed around individual boreholes or extended across multi-location groundwater monitoring networks, allowing groundwater levels and other environmental measurements to be assessed alongside rainfall, quarry inflows, pumping and discharge data.

Surface Water, Discharge & Flow

Quarry drainage, settlement systems, outfalls and receiving waters can present very different hydraulic conditions. Flow range, water depth, velocity, sediment, channel or pipe geometry and access can all influence the most appropriate measurement method.

Measurement methods can include manual velocity measurement, pressure/stage, acoustic Doppler, ultrasonic, area-velocity and electromagnetic technologies, depending on the site conditions and monitoring objectives.

Rainfall & Meteorological Monitoring

Local rainfall and meteorological data provide important context for understanding groundwater response, quarry inflows, lagoon levels, discharge rates, water-quality changes and particulate events.

Standalone or remotely connected monitoring systems can measure:

  • Rainfall

  • Air temperature and relative humidity

  • Barometric pressure

  • Wind speed and direction

  • Solar radiation

Rainfall data can be monitored alongside groundwater levels, surface water, flow and discharge, helping to understand how site conditions respond to individual rainfall events and longer-term changes.

Meteorological measurements can also support site operations. Wind speed and direction, for example, can provide context for particulate events or be used to establish operational thresholds for activities such as tipping.

Continuous Particulate Monitoring

Traditional deposited-dust methods such as the Bergerhoff method provide a time-integrated measure of dust deposition, but offer limited information about when an event occurred, how long it lasted, its intensity, or the conditions associated with it. This can significantly limit their usefulness when investigating short-duration particulate events or relating measurements to specific site activities.

Continuous particulate monitoring provides much greater temporal resolution, allowing changes and individual events to be identified as they occur and compared with site operations and meteorological conditions.

Systems are available for:

  • PM₁₀ and PM₂.₅

  • Total suspended particulate (TSP)

  • Site boundary and sensitive receptor monitoring

  • Wind speed and direction

  • Remote data access

  • Configurable alarms

When combined with meteorological monitoring, particulate concentrations can be assessed alongside wind speed and direction, providing considerably greater context when investigating individual events and potential emission sources.

Remote Monitoring & Telemetry

Telemetry connects individual instruments and monitoring locations into a common system, providing continuous visibility of site conditions without relying on routine visits to collect data. This can be particularly valuable across quarry and mining sites where monitoring locations are remote, access is difficult, conditions can change rapidly or environmental limits need to be demonstrated.

Remote monitoring can provide:

  • Continuous data access – view current and historical measurements remotely

  • Automated alarms and notifications – identify high water levels, changing discharge conditions, water-quality events or other defined thresholds

  • Event capture – identify short-duration changes that may occur between routine site visits or sampling rounds

  • Improved understanding of site response – compare rainfall, groundwater, discharge, flow and water-quality data to identify relationships between changing conditions

  • Operational insight – use monitoring data to inform pumping, water management, settlement systems and other site activities

Systems can range from individual telemetered instruments to multi-sensor stations and site-wide monitoring networks. Water level, flow, water quality, rainfall, meteorological and other compatible sensors can be integrated within a common data platform, providing a more complete picture of changing site conditions.
