Surface Water Level Monitoring

Surface water level monitoring provides a record of changing conditions in rivers, streams, lakes, wetlands and drainage systems. Measurements may support flood and drought monitoring, catchment studies, abstraction and discharge assessment, environmental compliance, and the calculation of flow at established gauging locations and control structures.

Depending on the application, monitoring can range from manual reference measurements and staff gauges through to continuous pressure measurement and remotely connected monitoring systems.

Flow Measurement

Flow measurement is fundamental to hydrological monitoring, but the most appropriate method depends on the channel geometry, water depth, velocity, hydraulic conditions, expected flow range and monitoring duration. Measurements may range from individual discharge gaugings through to permanent continuous flow monitoring installations.

Flux Enviro provides equipment and technical support across a range of hydrometric methods, including:

  • Acoustic Doppler Velocimeters (ADV) for point velocity and wading measurements

  • Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) for river discharge measurement and velocity profiling

  • Manual and autonomous ADCP deployment platforms for larger or difficult-to-access channels

  • Fixed Doppler velocity sensors for continuous monitoring in open channels and partially filled pipes

  • Weirs and flumes for established stage-discharge measurement

  • Water level monitoring and gauging systems for rating-curve applications

  • Portable flow and velocity meters for spot measurements and surveys

Selection of the correct monitoring approach is critical to obtaining representative data. Site hydraulics, expected flow range, channel geometry, installation constraints and monitoring objectives should therefore be considered before selecting the measurement method and instrumentation.

Surface Water Quality Monitoring

Water quality monitoring provides important information on changing conditions within rivers, streams, lakes, reservoirs and other surface waters, supporting routine monitoring, catchment studies, environmental research, pollution investigation and long-term assessment.

Flux Enviro provides equipment for spot measurements, water sampling and continuous multiparameter monitoring. YSI handheld instruments provide flexible field measurement for routine surveys and verification, while YSI EXO multiparameter sondes provide configurable platforms for continuous and longer-term deployments.

Our solutions include:

  • Dissolved oxygen meters including YSI ProSolo ODO

Parameters can include temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, ORP, turbidity, chlorophyll a, blue-green algae, fDOM, depth/pressure, ammonium, chloride and nitrate, together with derived measurements including specific conductance, salinity, TDS and resistivity.

For longer-term monitoring, water quality instrumentation can be integrated with remote telemetry, allowing water quality to be monitored alongside water level, flow, rainfall and meteorological data within the same monitoring network.

Rainfall & Catchment Monitoring

Rainfall and meteorological monitoring provide important context for understanding catchment response, changes in river level and flow, and variations in water quality. Data can support catchment studies, flood and drought monitoring, environmental research and hydrological modelling.

Monitoring systems can include:

Remote monitoring allows water level, flow, rainfall, water quality and meteorological data to be collected continuously and accessed without routine site visits. Systems can range from individual remote monitoring units through to multi-parameter stations and multi-location catchment monitoring networks.

Monitoring systems can include:

  • Cellular telemetry and remote communications

  • Cloud-based data access

  • Automated alarms, notifications and reporting

  • SDI-12, Modbus and analogue sensor integration

  • Solar, mains and battery power systems
